During the APECS International Polar Week, in the evening of 22 September 2020, APECS Germany hosted a Film Festival. Documentary short movies were kindly collected and provided by US APECS. We are very happy that we could offer this film night as an in-person event on the science campus on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam. The big lecture hall, which can usually host ~300 people, was perfect to host this event in a cinema-style and safe manner.
About 35 people from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and a few people from the general public joined our Film Festival. They enjoyed seven short movies about Antarctica, the changing Arctic and impacts on indigenous life, as well as about the current MOSAiC Expedition.
The movies were framed by an introduction to APECS and current activities of APECS Germany and a live interview with four participants of the MOSAiC Expedition. Luisa von Albedyll (APECS Germany Chair, AWI), Torsten Sachs (GFZ), Lisa Grosfeld and Josefine Lenz (both AWI, APECS), answered questions from the audience about their experiences and work in the Arctic sea ice. The AWI Doc team sponsored some beer outdoors at the end of the event. The organizers were happy to receive very positive feedback from the participants!
