APECS Germany at the AWI PhD Days – June 2025

In June, we had the chance to attend the AWI PhD Days at Bildungsstätte Bredbeck — a hidden gem tucked away in the woods of remote Osterholz. This annual event brings together PhD students associated with the Alfred Wegener Institute Germany, offering a platform to meet, share ideas, and dive into each other’s research.

From inspiring talks to late-night discussions, as well as fun social activities like pub quizzes and treasure hunts, the event is all about networking, exchanging experiences, and building connections beyond the usual office and lab life. One of the highlights of this multi-day gathering is the annual Marketplace, where PhD students had the opportunity to engage with us — Daria, Max, and Mara — in one-on-one conversations about APECS Germany.

It was such a pleasure to meet so many curious minds, share what we do, and connect with fellow early-career researchers. We had great conversations, welcomed new members to our network, and truly felt the excitement for polar and alpine research in the air. These encounters were truly inspiring! We were able to introduce APECS to many people, listen to ideas and feedback from existing members, and even brainstorm some ideas for future collaborations and visions.

Overall, it was a very successful event, and we hope to participate again next year — reconnecting with familiar faces and welcoming new ones into our community.
